OTACON BOYCOTT

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ ALL THE WAY THROUGH

For the time being, this is unofficial, but any support is greatly appreciated.

At Otakon 2004, a close friend was attending the karaoke event. The music was loud enough to make it difficult to keep track of things going on around her, and she was dragged into an adjacent room and raped. There weren't enough people maintaining the room to hear her cries for help. While she wishes to put this all behind her, it is also very important to push the chairs of Otakon to have proper security at their events! If there had been enough people staffed and enough maintenence being performed in each event room, something unexpected like this would have never happened. The person who did this to her was never apprehended, since he disappeared directly afterward and nobody had noticed anything.

Otakon chairs have been made aware of this occurence. If they do not respond positively to our complaints, a formal petition and boycott will be organized. Please keep an eye out here for more news and SPREAD THE WORD. If you have any knowledge of anything else like this, or any other criminal activity, happening AT THE CON itself, not only in the city of Baltimore, but within the "secure" setting of the convention, PLEASE do not hesitate to make the convention heads aware of it.

keep in mind to apply this thought to any other convention as well. we, as paying guests, expect to feel safe in the convention setting and should not have to worry about being mugged or raped or anything of that nature. if something like this should happen to you DO NOT HESITATE to contact officials and alert them as to the occurence.

thanks a lot everyone, any support is very much appreciated. while a boycott wont help our friend regain her dignity, it will show the convention heads that we are seriously concerned for our safety and well-being at their events.

well if you have any friends over here who are planning on going to this, or if you have a good place to post something (i.e. journal or webspace) then all i ask is that you spread the word around.

we arent necessarily asking people to skip out the convention. if the chairs dont listen to what we have to say, we've got some sort of organized protest in the works. something like wearing a tshirt or having a sign or something along those lines. you can copy and paste this entry and stick it as many places as you can think of <3

what do you get when you gather thousands of single, hormone driven otaku together for the biggest anime convention on the east coast?

...yeah, a rape case.

things like rape dont happen if there are enough people keeping security up.

she was in a karaoke room with the music turned up ridiculously loud and there was a serious lack of security personnel. it has nothing to do with the kind of people at the conventions itself.

you're a hormone driven otaku and i'm confident you wouldnt take advantage of someone that way. there is no excuse for something like rape, other than that there was simply not enough alertness and not enough security.

im not making an excuse, im more shoked if anything, really. i always though of Otakon as a safe place to gather with a bunch of people who all had something in common.

but its true, i always did notice an extreme lack of convention center security. especially around the kareoke room. that is a corner of the covention center that is always alot more empty then everywhere else, with maybe 2 convention staff covering the room. theres hardly any actual security guards posted anywhere but the main and side entrance.

what needs to happen is the convention commitee needs to hire more people to just cover corners, and the convention center needs to hire more security officers to cover the area during functions.

Damn.
With an event of that size either the chairs or the owners of the building(s) the Con was held at should have made certain there was ample security. Surely the insurance/legal implications of any large event demands that adequate security be provided!

Really hope something positive gets done about the situation.

I responded to this on DA, but it deserves a second response. There's no way anything like this should ever happen at a convention. I mean, for security purposes alone, aren't they not supposed to have open empty rooms? I though all rooms had to have at least one staff member...

That is horrible. I actually went last year and I thought the security could have been a bit tighter. (My friend and I were able to easily sneak in and out of lines and panels for example)

I'm sorry to hear about this.

Damn, that's bad. There weren't any grounds for charges of criminal negligence there or anything? I think the chairs should get their pants sued off for such a gross lack of security in an environment that they claim is "safe."

the biggest problem is that the girl went into "victim" mode
this happened almost a year ago and she didnt tell anybody about it until recently. she pretty much wants to just get over it and move on, but she made us aware so that we can make people aware that stuff like that DOES happen at these things

Rapists will die and burn in the lowest levels of hell. I hate all rapists with such a fiery passion for the reasons that it is so wrong and only someone extremely weak would resort to anything like that and rape has affected my personal life before and it doesn't only scar the victim but the people closest to the victim. If I ever meet a rapist, I will bash their f*cking face in with a cinder block and beat it to a bloody, unrecognizable pulp. I'm sorry, I know I'm violent, but I care that much about this issue. There is no excuse for something like rape to happen at these conventions.

Don't be sorry that you're violent. Despite the fact that you, for unknown reasons, wouldn't type "fucking" out all the way, you're being added as a friend for your wonderful description of the usefulness of cinder blocks.

Usually, I would type it ou all the way. But it was out of respect for Cassie's journal. Some people find that language kind of vulgar so I just tried to cover my bum and not offend anyone. Now, if I was typing in my own journal, those words would probably be in all caps even.

dude if fuckin people reading my journal are offended by the word fuck then they dont deserve to be reading it anyway ;)

As a member of Otakon staff I'd like to inform you that to my knowledge nothing of this nature has occurred at the con or has been reported. In fact, a friend of mine who's on the board of directors was downright surprised to hear about this.

If possible, I'd like to speak to the victim. I'd also like to know the day and time it happened and who it was reported to.

as far as we know, at the time it wasnt reported to anybody. when something like that happens, people tend to go into "victim" state of mind and panic, there are hundreds of reasons rape victims never go to the proper authorities.
anyway
she brought it to light just recently, as everyone was preparing for otakon 2005.
please feel free to have your friend who's on the board email me at oni.hara@gmail.com and give me better contact info than a livejournal of one of the staff members. i will then have her get in touch and fill in details.
thanks for your help
